Broadband Video Baluns
Broadband Video Over UTP Baluns
PV 880 Series
Broadband video (CATV) over UTP, once thought to
be impractical (or impossible), is now commonplace, due to the use of
the PV880 Series of Broadband Video Baluns from ETS. Commercial and professional
grade video can be transmitted over Category 5 and better UTP. Distance
is a function of frequency and signal level. Using Category 5 or better
cable, all channels up to 26, at a drive level of not more than 36dBmV
will accommodate 100 meters. The usable distance is reduced at higher
channels, reaching 50 meters at channel 78. APPLICATION NOTE – Off air
channel 26 is 542 to 548 MHz. CATV allows packing channels into unused
on-air frequencies. Applications include Media Retrieval Systems, Schools,
Churches, Production Monitoring, Security and Surveillance, Displays,
“Smart” Houses, Teleconferencing, Cable TV Distribution. Bandwidth to
550 MHz (CATV channel 70+).
Expanding the territories opened by the Broadband
Video Baluns, ETS introduces the PV884 and PV885 – ULTRA Broadband Video
Baluns. The frequency range has been increased and EMI reduced, both due
to enhanced filtering and an all metal enclosure. FCC requirements preclude
boosting signal levels to the values required to guarantee preset distances.
Distance achievable is a function of signal level, balance and the degree
to which the cable used unbalances the signal. Cat5e maintains signal
balance at least 5 dB better than Cat5. Level 7 (or equivalent) cable
is another 5 dB better, providing for a signal drive level of not more
than 46 dBmV. The PV884 offers a BNC connector for use with professional
grade equipment. “Prosumer” and consumer electronics which connect using
‘F’ connectors will require our PV885 balun. Bandwidth to 850 MHz (CATV
channel 120+).
